What is Kaiser Permanente?

Kaiser Permanente is one of the largest managed care organizations in the United States, providing comprehensive healthcare services through a combination of health insurance and medical care. Founded in 1945, Kaiser Permanente operates as a non-profit organization with a mission to deliver high-quality, affordable healthcare to its members. The company provides integrated care, meaning it offers both health insurance and medical services under one roof. Kaiser Permanente’s network includes hospitals, outpatient care centers, physicians, and specialists, all working collaboratively to improve the health outcomes of its members. It operates in several states, including California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Oregon, Virginia, and Washington, offering services such as preventive care, medical treatments, prescription services, and mental health support. The organization is well-regarded for its focus on preventive health and integrated care systems, which have helped it become a leader in the healthcare industry.

Pros and Cons of Kaiser Permanente

  • Pros:
    • Integrated Care System: Kaiser Permanente combines health insurance and medical care in one service, ensuring a seamless and coordinated experience for patients, with better access to doctors, medications, and treatment.
    • Preventive Health Focus: Kaiser Permanente places a strong emphasis on preventive care, including routine check-ups, screenings, and wellness programs, which helps members stay healthy and catch potential health issues early.
    • Comprehensive Coverage: The organization offers a wide range of health services, including hospital care, outpatient care, prescription medications, mental health services, and more, all under one umbrella.
    • High Member Satisfaction: Kaiser Permanente consistently ranks high in member satisfaction, particularly due to its personalized care, patient-centric approach, and easy access to a network of providers.
    • Digital Tools and App: Kaiser Permanente’s mobile app and online portal allow members to easily access health information, schedule appointments, order prescription refills, and communicate with healthcare providers, making healthcare more accessible and convenient.
  • Cons:
    • Limited Geographic Availability: Kaiser Permanente operates only in a limited number of states, which means it may not be an option for individuals living outside of its coverage areas.
    • Restricted Provider Network: Because Kaiser Permanente operates an integrated system, members are generally limited to using the organization’s own network of hospitals, physicians, and specialists, making it harder for patients to go outside of the network.
    • Higher Premiums for Some Plans: Some of Kaiser Permanente’s health insurance plans may come with higher premiums, especially for individuals who want more comprehensive coverage or choose higher-tier plans.
    • Potential Wait Times: While Kaiser Permanente is known for its efficiency, some members report longer wait times for appointments or procedures, especially during peak seasons or in high-demand areas.
    • Limited Flexibility for Out-of-Network Care: If you need medical care outside of the Kaiser Permanente network, the organization typically does not provide coverage for out-of-network providers, which can lead to higher out-of-pocket costs.

This app hardly works. There's always an issue with loading appointments or messages, and half the time it glitches out when signing in and goes back to my homescreen. I have done standard troubleshooting like closing and reopening and deleting and downloading the app. Just go to the website, which is still glitchy, but not nearly the same amount of problems."

This used to be such a good app! But now, as an Android user, I can't see the messages from my providers in the app's inbox. The messages are minimized and you have only a slither of a screen to view the messages and you then have to slowly scroll to (attempt to) see them. So frustrating, as messaging is one of the central functions of the app. Please fix this!"

This app was working great. For over a month now, my husband and I have both had the same problem with it. It doesn't show you new messages, only a notification that there's a new one in your mailbox. The appointments section has said "error: reload or try again later" for weeks. We've tried uninstalling the app, tried logging in via different smart phones. No luck. What is going on with this thing? Wish they'd fix it because I did like the app before it had all these issues."
